Barrier methods

The third solution is to exclude the pest with some kind of barrier if the other methods don’t work. By excluding the predator you are limiting its resources and diminishing its space. Reduced resources and habitat tends to inhibit rampant reproduction, which is good for the entire ecosystem.

Fencing is the most common way to exclude the bigger predators, especially deer. The fence has to be high (8 feet is ideal) and fairly substantial, since deer can jump even a 5-foot fence and can flatten a fence by leaning on it. Some homeowners even put a moat around the fence for good measure. Electrical wiring has been used for large acreages. Underground perimeter fencing, about two feet below ground, helps keep out the pesky diggers (but, then again, you have to ask yourself if this is really something you want to do; these animals eat a large number of grubs and insects while also aerating your soil for better plant growth).

Other forms of exclusion include putting a fine wire mesh just under the water’s surface to keep out fish eaters out of ponds, and draping fruit trees and bushes with plastic mesh to keep birds from raiding the pantry.
